A Swain’s Cogitations
(from Ben Gunn’s poem - 1893)
With mighty love is pierced my soul
Whene’er I think of thee
For whom while endless ages roll
My love shall faithful be
To gaze upon thy face so fair
Is but to love thee true
Sweet love of mine, so debonair
And rosy tinted hue
You may perhaps my heart decline
And treat it with disdain
But while the stars above us shine
My love shall never wane
And now my love as time doth fleet
I must bid thee farewell
How fast my heart for thee doth beat
None save my God can tell
To thee I fain would speak of love
I’ve cherished many years
And how my secret passion moved
My soul with doubts and fears
Since I can’t speak of love so deep
To one so good and pure
Because of fears that make me weep
But silently endure
